The Paseo del Born was designed by the Madrid architect Isidro González Velázquez, who also left his mark behind on another extremely iconic architectural walk: El Prado. The walk begins at the Plaza de la Reina, a roundabout crowned by a large fountain which acts as a channel between calle Consitución, el Borne and the part of Palma that is closest to the sea, which is made up of other spaces such as Hort del Rei and la Lonja. On the opposite side, at its end, you will find one of the most famous squares in the city: the Plaza de Juan Carlos I, better known as Plaza de las Tortugas, given that you can see a grand obelisk in the centre of the fountain being held up by four decorative turtles. Also, this square is known for being the setting for the celebrations of fans of the football teams FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and RCD Mallorca.
The Born, the walk which connects the two fountains, is one of the most visited in the city. Its gastronomic offerings and shopping means that thousands of people walk its foundations and it acts as a meetings point for many young people in Palma, who meet at its edges to spend their afternoons after school. Young people fade in with curious passers-by who look into the shops and carry on walking from the shopping street Jaime III until practically reaching the sea. Along the way you will find four sphinxes that mark the start and the end of the walk, it is an unmistakeable symbol of this area. The trees are in charge of lining this long walk. Its thick leaves provide a very pleasant feeling of shelter that covers you from the heat in summer and shelters you from the rain in winter.
It is without a doubt one of the most visited and cherished corners of the city. The epicentre of the hustle and bustle of the cosmopolitan large city that is Palma.
