Would you like to know what Christmas and New Year looks like in Mallorca? We will be sharing all the important details in this blog article.
Christmas in Spain is celebrated during the second half of December and revolves around four specific days:
The 22nd of December. This is the day that kickstarts the Christmas period. On this day the kids break up for the school holidays and the Christmas lottery draw is held, celebrated since 1763 where millions of Spanish people try and win their share of the millions of euros. The excitement begins on this day and doesn’t cease until the following year.
The 24th of December. Two days after the Christmas Lottery takes place is one of the most representative celebrations. Normally, if you don’t have holiday days to take, you work up until midday and during the afternoon get together with your family at home to celebrate Christmas Eve. This appetizing dinner has a great variety of typical Christmas food. It is common to see lamb or suckling pig, seafood, turkey, cured meats and desserts…Every family has their own traditions!
The 25th of December. The official day of Christmas. A public holiday across Spain and a day where all families come back together to eat and take advantage of the left-over food. The Christmas spirit is at its peak. At Grupo Roma we offer an ample catalogue of properties for sale in Palma de Mallorca so that you can celebrate it in style in your new home.
The 26th of December, Saint Stevens Day is celebrated in Mallorca and other areas such as Catalonia. It is commonly known as the second day of Christmas and for bringing together big groups of friends and family. It is also a public holiday, which makes these few days over Christmas quite hectic but very special.
New Year’s Eve is the final night of the year and a very special event in Spain. Mallorcans get together with their loved ones to welcome in the new year with a countdown just before 00:00 on January 1st. The last 12 seconds are counted and in each of them a grape is eaten. This celebration is unique in Spain and locals usually do it in a house or in the main squares of each city and town. In addition, the superstition says that they must wear red underwear so that the following year it will bring them good luck. Have you got your outfit ready?
